LAS VEGAS WEATHER: Is December a good time to visit?

One of the things we get asked most often is when is the best time to visit Las Vegas for great weather. So, what can you expect from the weather in December and will it be a good time for you to hit the Strip?

December is certainly a relatively popular time of the year to visit Las Vegas, despite the comparatively poor weather at that time of the year.

Let’s have a closer look at the Las Vegas weather in December.

Low temperature: 1C/34F

Day temperature: 11.3C/52F

Night temperature: 8.1C/47F

What to expect from the Las Vegas weather in December

If you are going to Vegas in December, you have to do so fully aware that it is the chilliest part of the year in the city. That doesn’t necessarily mean ‘cold,’ though. Certainly, it is a lot more pleasant there in December than it is in, for example, the UK.

There are also fewer daylight hours than any other part of the year. However, to be fair, Vegas is definitely at its best when it’s lit up by neon anyway.

Definitely expect far more chilly days than milder ones, though. The breeze can make it feel a little colder than it is too.

Las Vegas is a perfectly nice place to be in December, though. I wouldn’t want to put anyone off. You just won’t get the extremely hot weather, that’s all.

How likely is it to rain in Las Vegas in December?

If you are visiting Las Vegas in December, the chances are you are going to see some rain.

December is one of the wettest months in Nevada, in fact. There are usually between four and eight days during the month that see rainfall, and the showers can last a touch longer than they do at other times of the year.

There is even a small chance of some sleet and snow, but that is very unusual. Generally you will see some moderate and heavy rain, and perhaps the odd thunderstorm as well. You won’t see them especially often, though.

Humidity

Las Vegas is in the desert, so humidity is never really going to be a problem. For me personally, that is a big part of what makes the weather so good there.

It’s a very dry heat generally, and it’s very rare that the humidity climbs above 66% across the course of the whole year.

December is one of the more humid months. That, though, only means it will occasionally creep up into the ‘mildly humid’ kind of range. Generally, expect a dry climate.

What to pack for Las Vegas in December

It’s definitely not pool season, put it that way. That said, some of the resorts do have heated pools so keen swimmers can pack appropriate attire.

It’s not a great month for sun worshippers, though. There won’t be much sunbathing going on so you won’t need much in terms of summer wear.

I’d generally advise jeans, t-shirts and light layers for Las Vegas in December. Definitely take a hoodie too, or a jacket for the evenings.

One of the issues that does often come up in the dry heat is dry skin or lips, even in December. That’s why it’s often recommended to pack a lip balm/chapstick. Don’t worry if you don’t though, almost every gift shop or convenience store have them to purchase.
