Fancy running up all the stairs at The Strat in Las Vegas at record speed? No we don’t either. But one man did just that on Sunday 26 January, matching the record of six minutes and 46 seconds.
More than 600 participants took part in the Scale the Strat event, pitched as ‘The Premier Stair-Climbing Event in Las Vegas’ (who knew there was more than one?) to raise funds for the American Lung Association in Las Vegas.
The Strat Hotel and Casino stands at 1,149 ft (350.2 m) with the tallest observation tower in the US and participants climb the 108 floors and 1,455 steps at whatever pace they choose.
One man though, Soh Wai Ching, 28, of Malaysia, who is the top-ranked tower runner in the world (a what?), did it in the fastest time, equalling the event record set in 2020.
Wai Ching is a former winner of the event, winning in 2022 with a time of 6.57, however he shaved 11 seconds off that time to equal the 6.46 record of Alexis Trujillo of Mexico.
Since it began in 2008, the Scale the Strat event has raised more than $2.8 million and has featured company teams, families and firefighters in full protective gear. Most people take around 30 – 40 minutes to complete the challenge.
Congratulations and well done to everyone taking part, I still think we’ll be taking the elevator on our next visit!
